Considering becoming a registered childminder

There are a number of things to consider about becoming a registered childminder. 

Before you apply

Before applying to Ofsted, you must have:

  • demonstrated you have knowledge and understanding of the EYFS, including how to implement it, as part of the registration process with Ofsted. Or you may have to complete training on the EYFS if you do not meet the above criteria.
  • a DBS check though the Ofsted portal and you could consider signing up to the update service. For you and all household members 16 and over, the cost is approximately £52 each.
  • a paediatric first aid certificate.
  • submitted your health declaration form to your GP. There is usually a charge for this service.
  • contacted your referees.

Once you're registered

Once registered as a childminder you should:

  • continue to develop your skills by attending training often held during the evening and weekend in venues around Camden.
  • write policies on child protection, allegations made against you or family members, complaints or how you manage children's behaviour.
  • work in partnership with parents/carers.

Running a small business from your home

If you are a running a childminding business from your home you should:

  • gain permission to run a business from your home. Do you own your own home or have permission from your landlord to run a business from their property.
  • consider how childminding will fit in with your family routine?
  • be happy to work alone and be your own boss?
  • consider the wear and tear on your home
  • plan how you will market your childminding service
  • consider the financial outlay of setting up the business and buying equipment like toys

Responsibilities of being self-employed

You must register as self-employed with HM Revenue & Customs and be responsible for your own income tax and national insurance contributions. You must also keep business records of your income, expenditure.
