Are you concerned about your health? Struggling to get active? If you live in Camden or Islington, speak to your GP or other health professional about exercise on referral, a free 12-week exercise programme.

What is exercise on referral?

Exercise on referral is a free 12-week programme of exercise that will get you more active and improve your mental health and wellbeing.

How does it work?

You will have a one-to-one welcome meeting with a health coach at one of the centres either in Camden or Islington. At this welcome meeting we will work together to discuss your goals, gather some information and agree an action plan with you.

You will decide your start date, find out the locations of the various programmes run in your area and make sure you’re ready to start your 12-week programme.

We offer flexible appointments at venues across Camden and Islington throughout the year and you can choose to attend on a day and time that suits you. Our range of activities includes the Green Gym in Islington. Make sure to book to avoid disappointment.

Support for mental health referrals

If you join the programme while experiencing mental or behavioural health conditions such as depression, social anxiety and health anxiety we will give you access to SilverCloud, a safe and secure online space with personalised tools to help you with these problems.

You will be able to complete the programme at your own pace, where and when it suits you. Your health coach will tell you more about this on your first meeting.

What next?

At the end of the 12 weeks, you can receive nine months of free support from our coaches to help you stick to your new lifestyle, including monthly catch-up sessions and motivational texts. You will also be eligible for more than 50% off gym membership at any GLL leisure centre in Camden or Islington.

Am I eligible?

You can ask your GP to refer you to exercise on referral if you are over 18, and live in Camden or Islington or are registered with a GP in any of the two boroughs.

You must also:

  • be inactive or
  • be at risk of developing certain illnesses such as diabetes or heart disease or
  • have an existing health condition such as diabetes, osteoporosis, depression or other conditions (your GP or health professional will know which conditions are eligible for the programme)

You will not be able to join if you have been referred to the programme in the last 6 months.

How do I join?

You need to be referred by your GP or health professional to the exercise on referral programme, so please speak to your GP and they will know how to refer you.

Once you have been referred we will contact you within two weeks to book your first appointment.

There are free outdoor gyms and green gyms, as well as free health walks and a variety of community physical activities on offer.

You can also use some of the low-cost and free sport pitches in Camden parks or contact any of these football pitches, which can be booked by paying a fee.

There is something for everyone in Islington whatever your physical ability, age, or whether you have a disability.

Check for sports and other types of physical activities at clubs, leisure centres, parks, community centres and other venues.
