Overcrowded families

Declutter

When your house is overcrowded and you want to make space, what are some problems you may face?

Making a start

It's hard to know where to start. This is because it is important to be practical as emotions can get in the way.

Putting things off

Dealing with an overcrowded house may feel like climbing a mountain. It's important to take it one step at a time. Here are some steps to getting rid of clutter.

Be in the right frame of mind

Keep in mind that you are getting rid of things, not finding another space to store them.  Be clear about what you are keeping and what you are letting go.

Your new clutter-free system

  • Do you need it?
  • Is it broken?
  • Do you like it?
  • Is it worn out?
  • Does it fit?

Choose your starting point

Start with a small area, clear out a small cupboard, drawers or a bookshelf.

Make a plan

Be clear about your goal. Be clear about what you want to get rid of. If you’re not sure what to do put your plan in writing.

Start to clear the clutter

Choose an area away from the place you want to clear. Use this area to start sorting items into piles. Sort similar items together and this will let you see how many duplicate items you have.

The next step could be the hardest - getting rid of the things.

Consider donating unwanted items to charity
