Out of school care

The term 'out of school care' covers provision that looks after children around the school day and in the school holidays. They offer play opportunities and childcare for school-age children in a supervised setting.

Care may be provided by voluntary or community organisations, employers or private companies and are usually based in or near schools.

Activities are planned to help children play, learn and relax with their friends (whilst making new ones) in a stimulating, yet comfortable and safe environment.

What are the different types of out of school care?

  • breakfast clubs, open in the morning, before school usually from 8.00am, serving breakfast. Most are based on school premises, contact schools directly for further information.
  • after school clubs, open after the school day finishes until about 6.00pm. Offering a regular childcare service everyday they may be based in a school or nearby and will pick up the children from school.
  • holiday playschemes, open during school holidays, although often operating from school premises parents are not tied to a particular scheme but can shop around for the type of activities they want.
