Complain about schools, universities and colleges

On these pages you will find helpful advice on how to complain about services provided by a school, university or college.

How do I complain about a school service?

You first need to take up your complaint with your child's school. The school can tell you how to do that. You can ask them for a leaflet that will have the details. Most complaints can be resolved quickly in this way and additional advice can be found at www.education.gov.uk

If you are not satisfied after that, you can ask the governing body to look at your complaint.

If you would like further information on how to make a complaint about something that has happened at school, you can contact the school complaints team directly at school.complaints@camden.gov.uk

If you have been through the school’s complaint procedure, but you still have some concerns, you may then complain to the Department for Education www.education.gov.uk

Please see attached overview of the schools three step process:

What do I do if I am unhappy about a school refusing to offer my child a place?

If your child has been refused a place at the school you have chosen, you have the right to appeal against the decision.

You can ask at the school for an appeal form. For further advice on the appeal procedure in community schools and for information about school vacancies in Camden please contact the school admissions team

How do I complain about independent schools?

Guidance on making a complaint is available from the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Please contact the Independent Schools Inspectorate at www.isi.net

How do I complain about a university or college?

You first need to take up your complaint locally. The university or college can tell you how to do that. You can ask them for a leaflet that will have the details. Most complaints can be resolved quickly in this way.

If you are not satisfied after that, some universities and colleges will allow someone outside the organisation to look at the case. You can get details from the university or college.

If your complaint is about misleading information in a prospectus, you can appeal to the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education at www.qaa.ac.uk
