- Apply for a special treatment establishment licence online
Any premises offering a special treatment must be licensed by the Local Authority. Special treatments include procedures such as:
- acupuncture
- cosmetic piercing
- massage
- manicure
- sauna
- tattooing
- other special treatments of a like kind
This definition includes:
- aromatherapy, reflexology and shiatsu;
- ultra violet tanning, faradism, galvanism, infra-red, laser and ultra high frequency treatments, electrolysis;
- nail extensions and pedicure; semi-permanent makeup;
- flotation tanks, steam baths/rooms/chambers, facial steamers, spa and whirlpool baths.
All premises must comply with the Conditions Relating to the Licensing of Massage and Special Treatments and the Massage and Special Treatment Guidance.

It is an offence for any person to administer or advertise the availability of a special treatment without a licence unless there is an exemption in force. Any person found guilty of an offence may be liable on summary conviction to a fine of up to £2,500.
